DETAILS
The most often asked question is obviously what is the price of a given album. It is hard to answer until you pick your images for use in the album and decide what images are to appear together on any given page. Since Book and Flush albums use digital image files any number of images can be designed on a page. |

ALBUM PAGE DESIGN SERVICES AlbumArt offers Album Design Services as a way to bring the price down a bit from what manufacturers need to charge. Bear in mind they are worth it. They have large facilities and staff to support. We are small and can do a limited number of projects at a time and then have a waiting list. Most everyone takes quite a while to prepare for the making of a book album so we don't see this as a problem for the short term. DESIGN
COSTS: AlbumArt charges $2.00/image for Color Managed Images designing
the album. OR Getting

DEFINITIONS are in order so you know what We are talking about. A page is half of a spread. It forms either the right or left side of a book. In most FLUSH albums the front inside cover is on the left so page one is on the right side, and page two (an even number) is on the left when the Leaf is turned. Page three is across from page two. The number three is an odd number. So odd numbers are always on the right side of the spread. Make sense? Just like a book you read. So a spread forms two pages. This is important in understanding what images appear on what page and also reading price lists. In most BOOK albums the pages start as a spread of two sides. In this case page one is on the left and page two is on the other side of the spread on the right page. So we think of spreads....with two sides opposite each other. Page = Sides = 1/2 Spread Again: More and more companies are making these digital albums as Spreads, so page one now actually starts on the left with the reverse side a blank.... so side one is on the left and side two is the second part of the spread on the right. Before designing, choose an album company then check in to see how they want it! The more images you have on a page the smaller they become. One image can fill a whole page of be the size of a wallet with a lot of negative space. Two images become smaller. Imagine 9 to 12 images on a page. Small! A good guideline if we do the design: Every
book has an even number of pages/sides. We have found estimating price of a digital album using 2-3 images per side works well in determining the number of sides of an album. These do not apply to GraphiStudio if The Graphi Team designs your book. Use their Layout Chart to determine # of Pages for Number if Images for each of five design styles.
Bear in mind that most people want a mix of image sizes so the above 2-3 images per page is an average number of images per side. Some pages would have a single full page bleed image, others the same with one or two small inset detail shots, some with a mix of two to six images per page. Maybe a few sides with nine images. The higher the number of images on a side the smaller the images are displayed. Select
your images, you should edit them to insure there are not too many shots
duplicated. Photo series are fun and can be included to add some fun and
life to the design. Think of scene setting shots and details for background
images if you like that kind of design. Close Up details shots
are nice often run small or as a background image. DESIGNING YOUR OWN ALBUM: Calibrate Your Monitor is the first step! If pre-designing your own designs, please ask about the specific album brand you want to use to make sure you know where page one starts! This is important so particular images are on spreads opposite each other, making the story easier to comprehend giving a better overall design effect. Some albums start/end with solo sides.
If you want to try it we suggest Luma Pix for $119 Pro Version needed for His Res Output. Limits Canvas size to 13x19 ....too bad not 20 inches. So mostly you will do solo pages. 11x14 is a nice option if you don't mind higher costs in printing and album related costs. Pros use Photoshop 6, 7, CS or CSII. Using a program that allows color management is important to the prints look great!
PREPARING THE IMAGES: Preparing the images for different uses you may want to create folders much like below illustration. Always leave a master set of files unaltered. Just copy and paste them into new folders as needed. If you work on them in PhotoShop or JASC than always SAVE AS and create new file name. Like 0001a,jpg or 0001BW.jpg or 0001sue.jpg
METHOD ONE: The easiest to prepare.
METHOD TWO: Easy to prepare. Saves 15 cents per image renumbering fee.
METHOD THREE: Put images into sub folders grouping images you want on same pages.
Be sure to mark each CD/DVD with your name and e-mail address and contents using an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie. Mark each like this: 1 of 4 2 of 4 3 of 4 4 of 4
We prefer CD's / DVD's. Floppies are too small as you know. Do not send any camera media cards like smart cards, SD cards, CF cards or the like. We cannot be responsible for them. CD's are the cheapest way to go. You will have a copy on your computer. If one gets damaged, lost or whatever, it is a simple matter for you to burn another one. Never send original image files! If necessary have the lab make duplicates for you if you don't have a CD burner. Only send images you want in the album. You can have a folder called EXTRA_IMAGES or MAYBES if you like some but don't know where to put them of if there is room to fit them in. They may not be used at all. So bear that in mind. So if you really want an image in the album put it on some page and include instructions with file name and page location. Indicate that it's location in the album can be anywhere it fits. FAQ: DUPLICATE ALBUMS 12x12 > 10x10 > 8x8 > 5x5 > 3x3 Are all the same proportion square! So 5x5 is a perfect parent size especially if not too many pages as it can fit in a purse. The more images per page the smaller they get to fit them in. 5x5 duplicates all have pretty small images reproduced so parents with bifocals - poor eyesight would appreciate a 8x8 size instead. They need bigger images to look at. Much like large type for reading.....paperbacks are out for some.... 11x14 Primary Album > Best Duplicate Size is 5.5x7 = Same Proportion 10x15 Primary Album > Best Duplicate Size is 5x7.5 = Same Proportion 8 x10 Primary Album > Best Duplicate Size is 6x8/4x5 = Same Proportion Many companies do not offer these above duplicate sizes, so square is the way to go! GUTTERS: Center of the album has a gutter. Any Issues? The gutter width is dependant on the thickness of the mounting board for ANY given album company or album "line". The thicker the boards the wider the gutter. Some album companies do not cut the spread prints. They score the print, then mount the full print then fold the print. Over time a pink line will appear showing the emulsion substrate. So most think the cut method with gutter is better and lasts/looks better. Most album companies now have the gutter down to 2mm thick. So not a problem running images across it except for small faces. Try to have the gutter run across a shoulder in this case. All Flush Albums of any brand trim the edges regardless. This is how flush is made. You wouldn't want one print sticking out more than another. Bear in mind all this is done by hand. There is "Slop" in the method and sometimes mounting is not quite as accurate as you would hope. Hence the 1/2" inset from the edge for Type and important Inset photos. Full Bleed images to the edge should go all the way to the edge. 1/8" to 1/4" will get trimmed on all three outside edges of the prints. = Flush. Spreads designs printed are cut by the album company so they can align them perfectly. So the front page is designed solor (i.e. 10x10, 12x12 whatever size you want...) , then all spreads if you like or a mix with solo page designs then ends with a solo print.
